BY AARON AINOMUGISHA. At least six people have been confirmed dead and 40 injured after two buses were involved in a head-on collision along Ntungamo-Kabale Road this morning around 4am,Thursday 30,2022 at Rwahi town council on Rukiga-Ntungamo district border.
The accident involved Volcano Bus Company motor vehicle reg. no. RAD798B (HYUNDAI) and Oxygen Bus Company motor vehicle reg. no. KCU054L (SCANIA).
Police has confirmed that Murara Alphonse, a Rwandan driver of Volcano Bus and Omido David, a Kenyan who was the driver of the Oxygen bus died on the spot. The other who died include Ishingiro Mustafa who’s a Rwandan, Gakulu Cloude the conductor of the Oxygen bus, Hakizimana Etiene who’s a Rwandan passenger on Volcano Bus, and a yet to be identified Burundian female passenger who was aboard the Oxygen bus.
The over 40 passengers whose particulars are yet to be established were rushed to Rotom Health Centre in Muhanga.
Police attribute the cause of the accident to reckless driving by the driver of the Volcano bus, who, eyewitnesses say, was from Kampala side but left his side and was driving from the right where he met an on-coming Oxygen bus from Kabale side whose driver tried to swerve to his extreme left in order to dodge the Volcano bus in vain, thus causing the head-on collision. There was also a mist in the wee hours.
The bodies of the deceased have all been conveyed to the Kabale Regional Referral Hospital Mortuary for postmortem.
