Police in Kiruhura district have started investigations into circumstances under which a mob of boda boda riders attempted to raid Kikatsi police post in Nyabushozi, to lynch a suspected motorcycle thief identified as Kadu Mukasa,40,hailing from Sembabule district.
Kadu,was today handed over to police by boda boda riders and the area local defence after becoming suspicious of his intentions & acts in Kikatsi.
As police officers were still interrogating the suspect, a group of boda boda riders in the area became unruly and attacked the police post attempting to grab the suspect from police custody which prompted SPC Tumwine Emmanuel attached to the police post to fire bullets in the air to disperse the crowd,but they kept advancing towards him.
According to the Rwizi region police spokesperson ASP Samson Kasasira, the officer ended up shooting one of the boda boda riders Nabaasa Innocent who died on the spot, and injuring a mechanic identified as Nasasira Moses,28,resident of Kikatsi trading centre who was rushed to Mbarara regional referral hospital for treatment.
3 motorcycle including registration numbers UFB 700 Z, UFL 396 C and UFD 777 E also impounded by police.
SPC Tumwine has been arrested, his gun AK47 UPF No.4756-128133363 with 27 rounds of ammunition recovered, and the deceased’s body taken to Mbarara regional referral hospital mortuary for postmortem as investigations continue.
