Residents of Kobusera village Mpeefu sub county Kagadi district want the Uganda Wildlife Authority-UWA to up the game in handling wildlife, after a stray lion that had terrorized the area was shot dead today afternoon, 8th April 2022.
It had killed over ten goats and injured four people including a Uganda People’s Defence Force-UPDF officer before being killed during a joint operation by Uganda police, UPDF & Uganda Wildlife Authority teams.
The injured UPDF officer is Corporal Amodoi Moses attached to the line infantry battalion, who was injured on the arms after the lion overpowered him and he was saved by a community member who speared the lion.
Other 3 people who were also injured in the hunt by the local community before security teams intervened have been admitted at different health facilities.
Lt Col Samuel Mawanda Lubega, the commander of the line infantry battalion, says they decided to kill the lion because they feared that more people could be hurt as a mob had gathered to hunt the animal that had been attacking people and their animals since morning.
“There was a crowd that had formed around it, so it was practically impossible to capture it the way we planned to,” he explained.
The Kagadi district police commander, Moses Muzima Kiconco says the operation was successful, and he asked people to return to their work as investigations continue, to establish where it escaped from.
UWA officials only took the lion’s skin as the evidence, leaving room for some members of the community to enjoy its meat. Rise News Uganda TWITTER https://t.co/jD7xhk9exq
