Authorities in Uganda are investigating circumstances under which hackers stole Ugx62 billion ($17 million) in a sophisticated manner.
Sources confirm that the attack on the Bank of Uganda was carried out by a group known as ‘Waste’ based in Southeast Asia that breached the Ugandan central bank’s systems and stole the money from its accounts.
Bank authorities have now indicated that the bank recovered about 37 billion shillings of the amount taken, and police and the auditor general’s office are jointly investigating the incident.
The money was spirited away in September 2024 into two accounts in Japan and the UK. The fraud was an “inside job” and several employees at the central bank and the finance ministry have been questioned. Sources who preferred anonymity confirmed that President Museveni has also directed extensive investigations.
