The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Jane Frances Abodo on Tuesday, November 21, 2023 sanctioned the charge of murder against prominent military contractor and wealthy businesswoman Molly Katanga in respect to the death of her husband Henry Katanga.
Katanga, a prominent businessman, moneylender and Ankole kingdom prince was found dead on the morning of November 2, 2023, in his bedroom at his matrimonial home in Mbuya, Kampala, and Molly is accused of reportedly shooting Katanga dead during a quarrel upon the deceased’s return from a social hour during wee hours.
Uganda Police pathologist, Dr Male Mutumba reported in a postmortem that Katanga’s cause of death was “near contact range gunshot injuries.” The report indicates that “there was a stellate shaped gunshot entry wound (size: 1.5x3cm) on the left temporal scalp area, located 7 cm below the vertex and 18 cm left of the midline of the body.”
In addition, the DPP sanctioned the charge of destroying evidence against Kakwanza Patricia,32, (deceased’s step daughter) and Nkwanzi Martha Katanga,29, for tampering with the evidence at the crime scene.
Furthermore, the DPP also sanctioned the charge of accessory after the fact of murder against C-Care IHK (formerly International Hospital Kampala-IHK) nursing officer Otai Charles and Katangas’ family gardener Amanyire George for assisting the suspects escape punishment. Molly (still in ICU at C-CARE IHK) and Martha (also in hospital after giving birth) were charged in absentia, while Patricia, Otai and George were remanded by Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s court on November 21, 2023. All the 5 will appear in court on December 2, 2023, with the DPP saying more arrests and charges are most likely to be sanctioned.
