CROSSING A DEATH TRAP DAILY!

On Sunday afternoon, 1st October 2023, an 11-year-old girl identified as Fattie Nabukenya hailing from Nyakaizi cell became a victim after she drowned in River Rwizi while crossing the said Kanyeite bridge, a week after locals joined hands to rehabilitate the weak bridge in fear of the looming floods due to heavy rains.




Hundreds of people hailing from Nyakaizi and Katete cells in Mbarara city south, Mbarara city western Uganda have continued to cry out to their leaders to lobby for standard bridges, as they continue to risk their lives on a daily basis crossing three deadly brides; Kanyeite, Katete and TASO village.

Mbarara city has a population of about 300,000 people, and it is among the fastest developing cities across Africa. Situated in the heart of western Uganda linking Uganda to Tanzania, Rwanda and DR Congo, Mbarara is Uganda’s 2nd largest city after the capital Kampala.

HOW BIG IS THE DANGER OR PROBLEM? Kanyeite and TASO village bridges were washed away by floods in May 2023 putting many lives at stake. Kanyeite (meaning let me kill myself) is the biggest death trap crossed by over 700 people daily, including pupils going to different schools.

ANY ACTION? Jomo Mugabe, who is the division mayor Mbarara city south said that since Kanyeite and other bridges in the area broke down, residents have been left stranded and others have resorted to using a long route of about 5km to get to the city centre. By press time, RISE NEWS UGANDA NETWORK also confirmed that the Mbarara city south Member of Parliament Mwine Mpaka, Woman MP Rita Atukwasa Rita Bwahika and other local leaders have intervened to ensure that Kanyeite and TASO village bridges are budgeted for in the 2nd quarter of FY2023/24 and Katete bridge in FY2024/25, all expected to cost Ugx6.5 billion and 9 billion respectively.
