Human rights activists, politicians and concerned citizens have “quickly” come out to condemn the killings in Karamoja, northeastern Uganda amidst operations by Uganda People’s Defence Force-UPDF against cattle rustlers.

This follows growing concerns and allegations that the UPDF is killing innocent civilians after intensifying operations.
Security recently recovered 6 bodies of 3 geologists working with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Development and 3 UPDF soldiers, who had escorted the geologists.

The six are said to have been killed in Lotisan Sub County Moroto district by a joint group of Turkana and Matheniko warriors, an incident that was a sparking factor for these operations.

This group that had gone to do a mineral mapping survey, included a Makerere University student, who was doing her internship with the ministry. Authorities have also confirmed that the soldiers’ guns were taken by the attackers.

Security operations or massacres?

Following the incident, the UPDF Commander Land Forces, Lt. Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba warned the suspected rustlers to surrender, saying UPDF was “coming” for them.

Human rights activists, politicians and other concerned people have now asked the UPDF & government to value human rights, following increased reports of killing innocent people, burning houses and other gruesome acts.

The Karamoja sub-region consists of 7 districts in northeastern Uganda;Kaabong, Kotido, Abim, Moroto, Napak, Amudat and Nakapiripirit. We continue following closely, and reporting the underreported incidents in this matter.
