Additional reporting by Paula Gilbert, Connecting Africa. Africa’s entrepreneurial workforce and young population can help catalyze an artificial intelligence (AI) leapfrogging opportunity, but this will depend on the continent’s ability to upskill and reskill its labor force.

That is a key takeaway from a recent whitepaper from Cisco and Carnegie Mellon University Africa (CMU-Africa) titled “AI and the Workforce in Africa: Realizing the Region’s Potential Through Public and Private Sector Collaboration.”

The report said the African region holds the world’s largest potential AI workforce, with Africans accounting for 42% of the world’s youth and 75% of the continent’s population under the age of 35 by 2030.
