A Senior East African Community-EAC Diplomat, Dr Caroline Asiimwe, who serves as the Executive Secretary of the Kiswahili Commission has been arrested in Kenya.
Asiimwe was detained at Mombasa International Airport on Sunday night while traveling on official business to attend an EAC meeting scheduled that has opened this Monday morning in Mombasa.
The circumstances surrounding her arrest remain unclear, and efforts to obtain a detailed comment from the Kenyan police early Monday morning were futile.
However, officials said Dr Asiimwe’s detention was “in total disregard of the Diplomatic immunity she enjoys as an EAC diplomat and Executive.”
“The Kenya Police must issue a statement on the detention of this senior diplomat,” said a source who preferred anonymity to speak freely. Dr Asiimwe is a researcher and promoter of Kiswahili within the EAC region.
