FOOT-AND-MOUTH DISEASE & ANTHRAX RAVAGE THE CATTLE CORRIDOR

Veterinary authorities have now warned locals to avoid consuming infected meat, especially during this festive season. Anthrax has also been reported in areas of Kyotera, Lyantonde, and other hotspots.




CATTLE CORRIDOR. Authorities in Kazo district western Uganda have imposed a total ban on movement and sale of livestock and their products for two weeks, following the fresh outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD).
The disease has greatly threatened the districts of Kazo, Kiruhura, Lyantonde and Sembabule, and other parts of the cattle corridor.
In Kiruhura district, authorities in Kiruhura district have also closed Kyeibuza, Kyenshama and Nyakasharara livestock markets due to foot-and-mouth disease-FMD, with cases already reported in Sanga, Kinoni and Rwetamu sub counties.

Kiruhura district leadership led by Chairman LC 5 Dan Mukago continues to undertake different interventions to prevent the spread of FMD in the district and beyond, especially during this festive season.
Beyond Kazo and Kiruhura districts, Sembabule, Lyantonde and other parts of the cattle corridor are also affected. Farmers now want the government to ensure strict enforcement of operations and interventions preventing the spread of FDM and anthrax that are ravaging the cattle corridor.
