Monday, February 27, 2023 was a normal day, until the sky released terrible hailstorm from afternoon till late night in different parts of western Uganda.
In Kitura sub county Kashongi Constituency Kiruhura district, the locals were engulfed with worry and witnessed ambulance sirens as 16 pupils were being rushed to Mbarara regional referral after the collapse of p.3 and p.4 classroom block at Kitura C.O.U primary school due to the hailstorm.
On the same Monday evening, 12 pupils were stabilized and sent back home while 3 and 1 were discharged yesterday (Tuesday) and today (Wednesday) respectively after their CT Scan tests read healthy, and doctors giving them the necessary medical attention.
The school authorities led by head teacher Babu Wilberforce have now asked the area Members of Parliament (MPs) to engage office of the prime minister and other relevant stakeholders for relief since services at the school have been a bit hampered by this catastrophe. Kiruhura district Woman MP Jovanice Twinobusingye Rwenduru and Kashongi constituency MP Herbert Tayebwa Musasizi have already intervened.
Meanwhile, all is not well in Isingiro district where residents accuse the area LC 5 chairman Aaron Turahi and other authorities for delaying to respond to their outcry, following a hailstorm that killed 2 people,destroyed houses, gardens, animals and other properties leaving locals fearful of looming hunger.
The tragedy befell them on Monday evening especially in Nyamuyanja, Nyakitunda sub counties and other areas.
Environmental activists have now challenged everyone to plant trees and aggressively embrace climate and environmental restoration and protection interventions, as the Uganda National Meteorological Authority warns of more heavy rains and danger due to gross environmental degradation in different parts of the country.
