The Lyakarimira town clerk in Kabale district, Alex Ampaire is on the run for swindling Ugx 105 million meant for the construction of a multipurpose hall at Lyakarimira town council headquarters.

On 29th September 2022, the Resident District Commissioner-RDC Godfrey Nyakahuma and internal security officer Lauben Mutabazi intervened and made an abrupt oversight visit to Lyakarimira town council following a tipoff from a whistle blower that the town clerk had withdrawn money from the town council account to pay for the contracted works but never paid the contractor who has now threatened to sue Kabale district local government over delayed payment.

They further found out that two roads in the town council meant to be constructed during 2020/2021 and 2021/22 financial years had not been worked on yet the funds were disbursed by the district two years ago.

This prompted the RDC to summon an emergency meeting at his office where they harmonized with the town clerk on how to refund the money. Ampaire was given a period of two weeks to refund the money which elapsed last Friday, 14th October 2022 and he did not show up though he notified the office of the RDC that he was still selling his piece of land to raise the money.

According to the RDC, the Lyakarimira town council chairperson Enock Kazooba has confirmed to him that the two roads are now in their final stages, but security is now alert to arrest the Ampaire over the Ugx105 million issue if he doesn’t refund the taxpayers’ money.

“We’ll hunt for him like an animal”, RDC added.
