Environmental defenders and authorities in Ibanda district have decried escalating degradation of wetlands especially by government institutions which put the environment/climate at a high risk and greatly threaten biodiversity.
The Ibanda district senior environment officer, Ms. Confidence Akankwatsa is concerned that government institutions such as Nyabuhikye and Kiburara prisons have continued to degrade wetlands by carrying out activities such as cultivation which has hindered conservation and enforcement, because other people have used them as examples to defy enforcement.
The Ibanda district environment/natural resources department has issued several warnings to them but all in vain prompting the district authorities to write to prisons bosses and other high authorities including Ministry of Water & Environment to intervene.
Contacted about the matter, the Ibanda resident district commissioner-RDC Joseph Mukiibi confirmed that the enforcement team is set to convene a meeting with the district stakeholders in order to address these concerns and conserve climate.
