At least eight people, including two children, have been killed by landslide at a garbage dump in Kiteezi, Wakiso district today morning, Saturday August 10, 2024.
The Kampala Capital City Authority, the manager of the city waste, says this was caused by torrential rains.
Eye witnesses say the disaster happened at around 7AM.
“It should have occurred on a Friday when my children are at school. My children are down there, they are dead. They were sleeping. I have lost everything. The government hasn’t helped us,” a wailing mother.
“The Kampala Capital City Authority Landfill in Kiteezi has had a structural failure in waste mass this morning, resulting in a collapsed section of the landfill,” the KCCA said in a press release posted on its official handle on X, formerly Twitter.
