Still relied on as the backbone of Uganda in terms of generating income and being a leading source of food, farming and agriculture across the country is choking on climate change, as farmers struggle to benefit from their activities.
As Ugandan farmers cope with these challenges, environmental and climate activists and conservations, agriculture and farming experts, farmers and different stakeholders have continuously argued that there is an urgent need for more interventions to combat climate change and desertification in Uganda and Africa at large.
The situation has led to increased food insecurity, poverty as farmers are harvesting less compared to previous seasons, high costs of farming and agriculture, and other consequences of climate change which farmers are grappling with.
Rise News Uganda Network’s Aaron Ainomugisha speaks to Mr. Atwongyere Bruno, a climate-friendly and smart farming expert, and marketing manager at Green World International, who is spearheading interventions to address the pressing challenges being faced by local farmers due to climate change.

HOW BIG IS THE CLIMATE CHANGE ISSUE? WHAT AFFECTED FARMERS HAVE TO SAY: “These days you are not sure whether you’ll harvest or not. Climate issues have caused change in seasons. We have more sunshine than rain. As farmers, we are struggling,” a male coffee farmer in Isingiro district.
“Look at my garden. I have children…how will I feed them without food? My maize garden is completely destroyed by sunshine. The environment is being destroyed, and as farmers we are the losers,” a female farmer in Mbarara.
Farming and agriculture contributes over 70% of Uganda’s export earnings, and provides the bulk of raw materials for most industries that are predominantly agro-based. About 3 million smallholder subsistence farmers produce agricultural output in Uganda.
