In 1990, Ms. Jane Bigirwa lost her husband, becoming a young widow at the age of 26. She was working as a primary teacher, a job she later quit to begin a small retail shop in Kiyanja, Kamukuzi, Mbarara district (now city) in western Uganda.
Jane, who is now 60 years old moved to Rwebikoona market in 2004, where she currently owns a foodstuffs stall, and has thrived for the last 20 years.
Her success story is one of the under-reported stories highlighting how Ugandan and African market women are thriving amid different setbacks. Most of them are widows or single mothers, victims of domestic violence, and other vulnerable women and girls fending for their families.
