Aaron Ainomugisha. Kabale-based journalists in Kigezi sub region western Uganda have decried continued intimidation by the Kabale district LCV Chairman, Nelson Nshangabasheija.
The journalists on December 1, 2023 stormed Kabale Resident District Commission-RDC Godfrey Nyakahuma’s office protesting such cases of intimidation after Nshangabasheija allegedly threatened to “do something” to Jimmy Emmanuel, a journalist attached to Voice of Kigezi-VOK.
RISE NEWS UGANDA NETWORK has now established that Nshangabasheija has been accusing Jimmy and some other journalists for not supporting him or doing positive stories about him.
Speaking to Western Uganda Media and Community Initiative, several journalists from Kigezi sub region decried the increasing cases of violence against them, and they accused police and other authorities for delaying to handle their cases.
“Jimmy had an encounter on Tuesday at TikTok bar in Kigongi central division Kabale municipality, where Nshangabasheija reportedly threatened to harm him, prompting intervention from colleagues and the bar staff,” one of Jimmy’s friends explained.
When the journalists approached RDC Nyakahuma, he promptly called DPC Ruganza, instructing him to register a case and summon Nshangabasheija to record a statement. The threatening violence case was then recorded at Kabale Central Police station under reference number SD REF: 31/01/12/2023.
Jimmy says there is potential danger, because Nshangabasheija is armed.
Many cases of harassment and violence against journalists in western Uganda and other parts of the country continue to go unreported due to lack of enough resources and other services, poor working conditions being faced by different journalists, connivance between different authorities supposed to handle such cases, and other hindrances.
Western Uganda Media and Community Initiative has now condemned brutality against journalists, as efforts continue to ensure their safety, security and empowerment.
