Police in Rubirizi district western Uganda have arrested a 16-year-old juvenile on allegations of defiling a five-year-old child.

Martial Tumusiime, the Greater Bushenyi police spokesperson has identified the suspect as Ashiraf Kayondo, a male juvenile who is a pupil at Kyambura primary school in Kicwamba sub county in Rubirizi district.
The incident happened in Kyambura A village, Kyambura parish, Kicwamba sub county, Rubirizi District on 22/09/2023 at around 2:00 pm when the victim was left at home with her aunt and other children by her mother who went to the trading center to withdraw money from mobile money.
Zuuliah Ainembabazi,25, the victim’s mother said that after few minutes she returned home but nobody was there. She went outside the house and she met her daughter crying.
When she asked, the victim told her that Kayondo had slept with her. This forced the mother to report the matter to the chairperson LC 1 chairperson who advised her to report the matter to police. Exhibits were recovered though the scene of crime was already tampered with. Investigations are underway and the suspect will be arraigned before court on charges of aggravated defilement.
Concerned leaders and activists have now attributed these escalating Sexual and gender based violence (SGBV) cases to poverty, domestic violence, lack of sensitization and other challenges, calling upon stakeholders to jointly fight these cases.
