In the struggle to secure jobs and enjoy the benefits of being public servants, most people fall victims of the brokers and corrupt officials promising them jobs if they pay a certain amount of money.

This corruption and bribery syndicate solicited millions of money from job applicants in Mbarara city and district who responded to the February 2023 job advertisement for different positions in the land, health, finance, physical planning, natural resources and other departments, which has caused public outcry as the victims call for redress and justice.

In April 11, 2023 letter addressed to the chairperson Mbarara city service commission, Mayor Robert Kakyebezi confirmed that he received many complaints that some members of the commission were soliciting bribes from different job applicants promising them jobs, and he further directed that the ongoing recruitment be halted and guidance would be given after investigations.

In Mbarara district, the situation is not different after a one Edwin Akoragye – who had applied for senior assistant secretary/secretary district land board job in regard to the February 2023 advertisement, was shortlisted for March 22, 2023 interviews with other two applicants where he emerged the best.

Through his lawyer from Tumwebaze Atugonza Kobusingye Advocates & Legal Consultants, Akoragye has served the district service commission chairperson with intention to sue since he never got the job.

In this April 17, 2023 litigation notice, he says the other candidate got the job because he is the chairperson’s relative – and now he demands UGX10 million as damages.

These compelling complaints have also prompted the Equal Opportunities Commission-EOP, IGG, RDC/RCC,Police and other authorities to intervene.

Rise News Uganda is reliably informed that the EOC will hold a public inquiry in Mbarara on April 27,2023.
