The District Health Officer-DHO Rukungiri, Dr Akasiima Mucunguzi is in trouble over theft and sale of government drugs and other medical stores in the area.
This follows the arrest of two private medical workers on Monday morning, 30th January 2023 from two different private clinics in Buhunga sub county Rukungiri district during an operation led by the area Deputy Resident District Commissioner-DRDC Mr Ahimbisibwe Wilberforce Ongom, prompted by public outcry that drugs and other medical scores are stolen from government health centers and sold in private clinics.
The suspects who are detained at Rukungiri Central Police Station were from two private clinics in Rusheshe trading center and Omukarangara respectively, belonging to Dr. Julius Tukamusiima who is a health worker at Bugangari Health Center (IV) all in Buhunga Sub County. They were found with over seventeen boxes of different drug categories including those belonging to the government of Uganda, and upon interrogation – one of the suspects disclosed that they got these drugs from the DHO Mucunguzi through making requisitions to his office.
According to DHO Mucunguzi, these clinics are always supported to bring health services nearer to the local people.
Deputy RDC Ongom has now condemned the connivance between private clinics owners and DHOs to steal from the government saying the habit should stop with immediate effect for the benefit of local people.
“Those selling government drugs should tell us how and where they got them from so that the culprits are arrested and prosecuted,” he added.
