A daily burden;walking long distances & braving the hot sunshine to fetch water from swamps & dams – since they can’t access the tap without Ugx1000. Women & children are the most suffering!
Refugees in Nakivale Refugee Settlement and other residents of Isingiro district have cried out to relevant authorities and other stakeholders after being hit by severe water crisis.
This has been attributed to the high number of refugees fleeing the fighting between the Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC forces and M23 militants.
Over 150,000 refugees live in Nakivale Refugee settlement near the Uganda-Tanzania border especially those from Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, Burundi, Somalia, South Sudan, Ethiopia, among other countries.
The most affected are women and children who say they are asked to pay ugx1000 at available water points like taps forcing them to walk long distances & braving the hot sunshine to fetch free water from swamps & dams – since they can’t access the taps without paying Ugx1000.
Responding to our systems & structures related questions, Mr. Aaron Turahi who is the Isingiro District LC V Chairperson revealed that as the district they have a small budget of less than ugx100 million for water supply and related services in the settlement areas like Nakivale & Oruchinga. Turahi further stressed that this can only be solved if the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees-UNHCR and stakeholders work jointly to ensure enough water supply & sources for the refugees.
