Nairobi,Kenya. Activists led by human rights defender Julius Kamau have been arrested by police today Monday, September 21, 2026, while protesting outside the Ugandan Embassy over the continued detention of Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye and his co-accused.
The activists had gathered near the embassy to demand Besigye’s release and raise concerns over his continued detention since his arrest in Kenya.

Speaking to the media before his arrest, Kamau condemned the continued detention of Besigye, saying the Ugandan opposition figure should be released to seek medical treatment.
“Besigye will not be in prison today. What is going on? He should not be going through that. You know the man is ailing. He is very sick, and they cannot have a heart of humanity to release the man to go and be treated,” Kamau said.
Call to the international community.
The human rights defender also questioned the response of the international community to Besigye’s continued detention, urging greater attention to his situation.
Kamau further alleged that firearms reportedly recovered from Besigye and his co-accused, Abed Bitaro, had been planted on them by Kenyan police.

He said the allegations pointed to what he described as a wider problem of impunity and police brutality in Kenya.
“We have normalised impunity here. Police kill, and they get away with everything. They beat people up, they violate people’s rights and they get away with it. At this time, we are saying no,” he said.
The activists said their demonstration was intended to draw attention to Besigye’s case and demand respect for his rights.
Besige, a long-time Ugandan opposition figure, has faced legal proceedings following his arrest and subsequent transfer to Uganda. His continued detention has attracted attention from human rights activists and other groups who have raised concerns over his health and treatment.
