A disturbing video has emerged showing one of Uganda’s leading opposition figures and activists Sam Mugumya, months after he was abducted, with his family, politicians and activists alleging state involvement https://vt.tiktok.com/ZS4xfRnoG/
Mugumya,47, was a prominent aide to opposition politician Kizza Besigye. Besigye was abducted in Kenya two years ago and is currently in hospital,and still awaiting trial.
Mugumya was reportedly abducted on August 26, 2025 while having breakfast at NIM Hotel in Nyamitanga, Mbarara City western Uganda. At the time he was abducted, he had started mobilizations as Aspiring Member of Parliament representing Rukungiri municipality, Besigye’s home area.
The video of a tortured Mugumya has now surfaced amid escalating concerns about a growing crackdown on opposition figures, critical journalists and activists in Uganda.
His mother speaks out. “I only saw video showing him destroyed and bony,” his mother,Edinansi Katungwesi.
“Since he was kidnapped months ago, I don’t know anything about him or what is happening to him,” she said.
“It is the government that took my son and I am so angry at them. The government is meant to protect us and has turned against us, and worse of all against my son,” she added.
Where is Sam Mugumya? “In the basement they denied him food and water. They tortured him every day until one day he blacked out and nearly died. Fearing that Sam Mugumya might die in their hands they smuggled in a doctor who offered painkillers. However they resumed torturing him repeatedly and one day when Sam asked for water after them torturing him.They made him drink his own urine…,” Revolutionary Son Simon Wanyera posted.
Sam Mugumya is currently believed to be held at Lunyo/Kasenyi Basement in Entebbe with hundreds of other political prisoners.
