Tension and outcry have escalated in Mbarara City North Division Mbarara City as the division council and other authorities get divided over the allegations that a city businessman identified as Buryo is grabbing the Kyarwabuganda government land in Kakiika. The 14.62 hectares land houses Kyarwabuganda Health Centre III, LC 2 administrative units, Kyarwabuganda Trading Centre, and other facilities.
On Friday 1st July 2022, this matter was brought forward to council as councilors tasked the Division Mayor Gumisiriza Kyabwisho to force the Division Lands committee and Division Town Clerk to step aside and pave way for extensive investigations. Led by Nicholas Nuwagaba, councilors are concerned that the division lands committee and the division town clerk have information on how Kyarwabuganda was sold off to a one Buryo at Ugx350 million.
The Mayor Mbarara north division Gumisiriza Kyabwisho however quashes the allegations that the division is in connivance with Buryo to grab this land, because yet to be disclosed land grabbers came one night and surveyed the whole land before illegally processing a land title.
Mbarara North Division authorities working with the offices of the City Mayor, City Clerk, Resident City Commissioner-RCC and the city lands department have checked the land title with officials from Uganda land board and shockingly found out that Buryo had a fake land title of the said land with fake signatures of city clerk, chairman area land committee and the one for physical planner. They have now put caveats on the said land title and are pushing Uganda land board to cancel Buryo’s title as investigations continue to unearth those supporting or conniving with him.
This matter is one of the many ‘government land’ grabbing cases across Mbarara city. Other cases include National Forestry Authority-NFA land in Nyamitanga and others.
